PHD thesis in Arabic Literature and Criticism

The thesis title:  The maritime civilization in the Arab poetry tills the end of the ninth AH century:  A study in the theme and the artistic performance.

This research encloses the poetry which pictured the Arab dealing with the sea … this dealing that shaped their culture about the marine life, riding ships for journey, diving, excursion and war and how this influenced their imagination.
The research begins with an introduction about the maritime civilization concept and its history with the Arabs then the study is divided in two parts:
First part: the subjects of the maritime civilization in poetry… this part enclose 5 chapters.
The first Chapter: Ships in the time of peace which includes three studies. 
First study: The desert trip and its relation with the sea, this study was a kind of rooting to the mention of the maritime civilization in the first poetry and how they keep referring to it what is considered a very important phase that influenced the poets' imagination and has been associated to their desert life and their interest to the environment as well as an advanced step on the civilization's chain.
Second study was assigned for the maritime trip as it was mentioned in the pre-Islamic poetry and it prospered till it pictured all that is related to the sea from ships to sailors and travelers.
 The river trip came as the third study to shed light on a splendid prosperous and intimate competition to describe the new way and the new carriage to the praised.
The second chapter: the ships during the time of war. Its first study came to talk about the marine fleets; their importance, their nature, their soldiers and their tools as for the second study …. It talks about the maritime wars which those fleets fought associated by the historical facts.
The third chapter is the human activity to complete the parts of the maritime civilization so its first study handles the diving and fishing which the poets described accurately and with high proficiency either in the pictures or in the emotional reactions which reveals the old economical states and the touching civilized and social communication.
The second study treats the festivals and the sessions that penetrate the scene and the people enjoyment of the maritime atmosphere and the available potentials in that time to express the human joy and how he expresses his concerns and creates the annual occasions.
The third study ends by talking about the buildings and maritime facilities as material civilization's aspects that shows a major turnover in dealing with the sea and how to invest its boards and its capacity to provide a good life for the  human been .
The forth chapter: the impact of the maritime civilization on the poet's psychology so its first study talks about: meditation and reflection when the second study reveals the fear and horror that poet could feel towards the sea.
The fifth Chapter talks about the manifestations of the maritime civilization are in the poetry. It monitors the poetry forms that mentioned the sea like a moral civilization penetrating in the Arab heritage and their thought.
The first study: Praising that the poets employed the sea in generosity and giving an employment that express their admiration and amazement that it becomes a supreme model of the generous person.
The second study: in description to show the great influence that the sea had previously on the Arab imagination where the Arab poet compares it to the night, the army or anything that he wants to show its multitude.
The third study in flirtation showing a very close relation between the lover and the sea as it finds in it a world that distance him from any observer and the enviers' eyes and to sink in love and passion as he sinks in the sea.
The forth study: in other stuff to follow the sea manifestations in a less forms like honor, satire and wisdom. That study demonstrates the expansion of the poets 'employ of the sea and how they convoyed with the artistic requirements and motives
The second part included the artistic performance in three chapters. The first chapter was assigned for the poetic intertextuality so its first study presents how the poetry of the maritime civilization was affected by the holy Quran including divers' examples where the poets extract expressions and words describing the sea and its waves from the holy Quran and the prophets' stories.
The second study demonstrates the affect and effect phenomenon between the poets by availing of each other in word or meaning and by collaborating in many thoughts and pictures. The intertextuality ends by the third study which indicates the influence of the legends on the maritime civilization's poetry where the poet was not isolated from the old legends and where some pictures  was related to what it symbolize .
The second Chapter was designated to the language as it is the tool that illustrates the thoughts and the form that present the meaning.
The first study incurs to the words dictionary which  manifests the use of the words and its characteristics.
The second study gathers what is related to the semantic level. It presents every element of the civilization's elements separately to elicit the shown words semantic and the interne meanings as well as its far revelations. So he brings important visions of the uses of every field.
The third study: the structure level where was monitored all the important style forms that are related to the sentence structure. The Artistic part ends by talking about the picture in two studies. The first study illustrates the picture sources where the poets got their images and which affect their imagination. The second one studied the kinds of the partial picture from comparison, metaphor and symbolism … and the full picture which is related to the poet experience and the surrounding aspects of the text.
The study ended with a closure then an index of the sources and references in addition to a content index.
The most important results that the study concluded were:
1-    The multitude of the sea expressions and its words diversity in the old Arab poetry.
2-    The poets concern of the ships description and their names and kinds.
3-    The maritime trip description and its flourishing in the Andulsian poetry.
4-    The multitude of the river trip description and its flourishing in the Abassy poetry.
5-    Comparing the Camel description to the ship and the desert with the sea and vise versa.
6-    The connection between the maritime civilization forms and the praise also how the ship became the carriage to reach the one praised
7-                            The effect of some poets in their pictures and thoughts with the maritime civilization and its employment in their poetry and its manifestation in their stuff.
8-    The description of the fleets and the maritime war in the Abassy and Ayouby poetry and its flourishing in the Andulasian poetry.
9-    The poetry description of the human activity either in diving, fishing, festivals, maritime assemblies, buildings and facilities.

10  -The poet psychology affection with the maritime trip and how the fear and horror conquer his feelings.
11  – The contribution of the nature environment in shaping the poetic picture especially the animal like camels and birds.
12  – Exchanging ideas and meanings between poets where the late benefits from the earlier as well as intertextuality from the holly Quran .
